2-Minute DIY Eucalyptus Sugar Scrub

ree

After I graduated college I spent almost a year bartending on the Las Vegas strip. As you can imagine it was very high-volume. With that being said, let me tell you about the amount of dishes that we had to do throughout the night. Wow. You think the "after Thanksgiving dinner dishes" were bad, that's nothing compared to the glasses of hundreds of booze-thirsty patrons!

Well, consistently having my hands drowned in dish sanitizer, acids from fresh fruits and cuts from broken glass I was in desperate need of some TLC. I created this recipe for an easy DIY sugar scrub to moisturize, soften and soothe my aggravated skin. You'll find the ingredients at any grocery store (with the possible exception of the essential oil, but more on that in a second). This sugar scrub is great for rough, dry hands/feet and also great on legs and arms (however, due to the face being super sensitive, I do not recommend exfoliating your face with it - the abrasiveness may be too much). AND the smell is phenomenal. Eucalyptus is great for a little "boost". The exhilarating effects from the aroma are wonderful. Eucalyptus is also a great essential oil to use when you have a cold or congestion! If you just put a small drop under each nostril, it will clear you right up (make sure if your skin is sensitive to dilute the oil with a carrier oil like coconut or castor when applying like this)!

Vegan and Sustainable Sugar

In order to ensure all products are vegan and sustainable - make sure to double and triple check your sugar for the stamps "vegan or bone-char free". Also, I recommend not purchasing any sugar that you see grown in Florida. I'm not saying this because of the quality of the sugar, but a lot of the sugar that is harvested in Florida comes from an area around Lake Okeechobee (EAA - Everglades Agricultural Area), there's actually about 440,000 acres of sugarcane. The cane fields have been and are still consistently polluting the Everglades, an important ecosystem in Southwest Florida. Below I will link to a few of my favorite vegan sugar brands!

Essential Oil

Now, moving on to the essential oil. When I was new to the world of essential oils I didn't know there were good and bad oils. I just figured an oil was an oil. It turns out I was really wrong and I highly suggest investing in a decent oil (at least a few that you may use regularly). There are a few ways to ensure you are getting quality oils; 1) you can order through a representative of a company like Doterra or Young Living or, 2) you can check your local health store like Whole Foods. I personally don't plan on ingesting my essential oils just yet so I tend to use the ones from Whole Foods since they are a trusted brand. Another word of advice: do not, and I repeat, do not use essential oils from places like Walmart, Five-Below, Ross, Home Goods, etc. They do not have quality oils and can be dangerous. Oils that aren't equip for coming in contact with your body can cause rashes and allergic reactions. Honestly, I do not even use these in my diffuser since I am inhaling them, even in low doses. With that being said the oil used in this recipe is 100% Eucalyptus Essential Oil from Whole Foods Market.

2-Minute Eucalyptus Sugar Scrub

ree

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar (vegan)

  • ¼ cup coconut oil

  • Eucalyptus essential oil (or scent of choice)

Procedures:

  • Place the coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl and warm for about 10-15 seconds. Stir to ensure the oil has melted.

  • Measure out the sugar add to the coconut oil, stir to combine.

  • Add a few drops (I like it strong so I use 10-15) of the essential oil to the mixture (add more or less depending on how strong you want the scent). Stir to combine.

  • Store in a mason jar.

How to use: To exfoliate, dampen area and then scrub dry or rough skin with product for about 30 seconds (a little redness is normal since the sugar scrub is a bit abrasive). Rinse product, and pat dry. Your skin will feel smooth and rejuvenated!

*Do not rinse with soap after applying or the coconut oil will be removed, and the skin will not get as moisturized.

*Not recommended for facial use.
